Because we live so close to the Connecticut River, we are quite near the nesting grounds of more than twenty pairs of bald eagles. Each winter, we catch a glimpse of an eagle while driving on the highway, but that is usually the best we can do. Last weekend, we took the Eagle Flyer, a train out of Essex, for a wonderful trip up the shore of the Connecticut River. The train had two ornithologists on board, each of whom provided detailed information about bald eagles and their nesting habits. We de-trained at Eagle Landing State Park for about a half hour, hoping to see a bald eagle - and wouldn't you know it, we did, up close and personal! It was quite spectacular! We then got back on board and enjoyed the ride back to Essex. The girls enjoyed looking at the wildlife through our binoculars and the entire afternoon was interesting and relaxing. When they get older, we hope to take one of the river boat tours, where we should have even better luck spotting bald eagles.
The train ride.
In the trees, in the distance, you can see an eagle nest.
While we were at Eagle Landing State Park, this beauty flew right by us.
It was hard to take a good photo because I was trying to look at it and photograph it at the same time!
After flying by us, the eagle sat in this tree for a while.
The girls loved looking through the binoculars from the train.
