Hurricane Diaries: Day 1 - Day 4

We know that our friends and family in New Hampshire and elsewhere are curious about how we are weathering the aftermath of Irene.  I have been keeping a short "diary" of our hurricane adventures and was able to post because of internet access at work.  I'm hopeful that there will only be one other installment, but only time will tell.  I can't upload photos that we've taken, but at some point, those will come.  Let me say from the outset - Lee and I are incredibly proud of Elizabeth and Emily.  Not one word of complaint from them.  They are troopers.

Sunday:  We lost power at around 6:20 Sunday morning and shortly thereafter, the sound of our neighbors' tree falling drove us right out of bed.  We had yogurt and fruit for breakfast and spent the day reading, playing board games and napping.  The winds and rain cleared out about mid-afternoon and we walked around the neighborhood, checking out the damage.  Although there are many, many trees down, we didn't see any property damage - at least nothing that rendered a home uninhabitable.  Lee cooked fried eggs and chicken on the grill and we had shrimp that was in the freezer.  After dinner, we drove around the area and were again stunned by the number of trees down and roads that were completely blocked.  Click here for a good article (and video) regarding the tree damage in Middletown.

Monday:  24 hours without power.  The girls shared a banana and graham crackers for breakfast, while I had peanut butter and fluff and Lee had a banana and yogurt that stayed cold in our freezer.  The Y has power, so Lee worked first thing and then headed there with the girls and I headed to work.  As of 11 am, CL&P didn't have an estimate for power restoration for our town, but given the damage, that's not surprising. I showered at my gym and Lee and the girls showered at the Y in the afternoon.  The biggest thing on my mind right now is laundry - we are starting to run low on some items of clothing, which means that a trip to the laundromat is probably in our future.  For dinner, we had the last bag of frozen shrimp and garlic bread cooked on the grill.  While Lee worked on Monday night, I spent time talking to neighbors and reading by flashlight.  We fell asleep on Monday night to the sound of generators in our neighborhood.

As of Monday morning, the grey areas represented 80-100% of customers without power.

Tuesday:  We entered our 48th hour without power early this morning but we are still going strong.  Kindergarten open house was cancelled today, which was very disappointing for Emily.  42% of Middletown remains without power, although we know that some larger areas have been brought back on line.  On a high note, we ordered out for dinner and I was able to do a load of laundry at our friends' Brian and Ninette's house.  The Connecticut River is bracing for the flood waters from Vermont and at lunch, it was as high as I've ever seen it in Hartford.

Wednesday:  This morning, we entered our 72nd consecutive hour without power.  Our town is slowly but surely getting its power back - only 28% of households are without power as of mid-morning.  Unfortunately, CL&P has no estimate for our neighborhood at this point, which means that they don't plan to have a crew working on it today.  The good news is that they are projecting that all customers - statewide - will have power by September 7th, so there is an end in sight.  This morning, Elizabeth told me that the worst thing about no electricity is that she doesn't get to have her morning bagel.  And I will admit to missing my morning coffee.  Other than that, we are finding our lack of power to be a minor inconvenience.  After watching footage of the flooding in Vermont and New Jersey, we know that we have nothing to complain about.  The Connecticut River crested in Middletown this morning at 15.7 feet above flood level - the worst flooding since 1987.  It was amazing to drive by it this morning.

Fairy Houses

At some point last week, the girls became enthralled with fairy houses.  I'm not sure where it came from, but they literally spent hours over the weekend building fairy houses.  I casually pointed out to Lee that it would be cool if we put something in/near the fairy houses to make them think that fairies were actually living in them and about a 1/2 hour after I put them to bed, I noticed him busy in the backyard.  When I went to check on what he was doing, I found him leaving all sorts of little treasures around their fairy houses - shells, black-eyed susans, miniature vegetables from the garden, glass beads, etc.  When the girls found the treasures the next day (Lee was not home at the time), they were beyond excited; I could barely get them to calm down.  As soon as Lee returned, they dragged him to the backyard to show him; they showed our neighbors; and they showed neighborhood kids that happened to walk by the house.  They also spent the rest of day putting out flowers and grass clippings for the fairies, just in case they happened to return that night.  And wouldn't you know it, they did, leaving pink pixie dust (chalk) all over the bark of the tree, more shells, and vines tied around the tree.  My kids have the greatest dad!

The shells are from the fairies, the flower petals from the girls.

Fashion Show

As soon as we returned from NYC, the girls, Elizabeth Cole and Bitty Baby put on a fashion show for us, modeling all of their new outfits.  Here are just some of the clothes they bought:
BB in her new ballerina outfit, complete with ballet shoes.
BB has her own lambie, a miniature version of Emily's - her she is, clutching her lambie and waiting for her bottle.
EC, in a Josephina outfit, as American Girl no longer sells Elizabeth and Felicity outfits - yes, my child had to choose a "retired" AG doll.
In a Rebecca outfit, with glasses.  Elizabeth was so excited about the glasses!!

New York City: American Girl Place

I saved the best for last, although it is simply impossible for me to convey the joy that the girls experienced during our visit to American Girl Place.  First of all, nothing could wipe the smiles off of their faces the entire time we were in the store, especially Elizabeth.  It was because of her that we actually had to make two trips there!  We started our day at AG Place about 4 minutes after the doors opened for the day.  Both Elizabeth Cole had her hair done at the Salon and both EC and BB had a spa treatment, which made them look just like new.  From the Salon, we headed to the Bitty Baby floor, so that Emily could spend her gift certificates - she looked at each and every item with delight and then made her selections, blowing through her gift cards in no time.  We then headed back to the historical floor, so that Elizabeth could look through all of the historical items (even though they no longer sell Felicity and Elizabeth items), and then down to the My American Girl floor, where the rest of the clothing and accessories are sold.  Elizabeth does not make snap decisions, so although she spent her gift certificates that morning, we ended up returning to AG Place in the afternoon so that she could spend the money that Aunt Denise alloted her for the trip (she wanted to check out FAO Schwartz and Toys R Us before making her decision).  When her items totaled to more than her alloted amount, she dipped into her own wallet and spent every last dime she had to complete her purchase.  That's right - Elizabeth returned from New York completely broke - but incredibly happy!!!

Selecting a hair style for Elizabeth Cole.
EC, getting her hair done.
Bitty Baby, ready for her spa treatment.
BB really needed a good cleaning!!
It took a while to do EC's hair.

Emily and Bitty Baby are so happy!!

EC's hair is beautiful!!
You can tell how happy EC is to have her hair nice and neat again.
Emily, on her shopping spree.
Hmmmm, what should I choose?
Paying with her gift cards.

Giving this Bitty Baby a little bath.
Checking out some of the mini historical dolls.
Because Elizabeth Cole was retired, we can't buy any outfits that are specific to her historical character. Elizabeth loved looking at Rebecca and Josephina's (above) clothes.
Resting.
Round 2 at American Girl Place.
Thrilled with her purchases!!
Elizabeth even carried her own bag (for a while).

New York: Ruby Foo's

We decided to try someplace new for lunch this year and, after scouring the internet and rejecting almost every restaurant around, I landed on Ruby Foo's, a pan-asian restaurant in the heart of Times Square.  Although a couple of native New Yorkers warned me away, we paid no attention and went anyway - and it was a great move.  The girls absolutely loved it, as the wait staff really caters to children, and the food was excellent.

The girls loved the chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
The decor was lovely.
Denise and I ordered a dumpling sampler for an appetizer - the girls were starving, so they decided to try them, with chop sticks!  They loved them and did a pretty good job with the chop sticks.

When we were leaving, Emily noticed a tree filled with these butterflies and told the hostess that they were beautiful.  She made sure no one was looking and then, to Emily's delight, "would you like one?" When Emily nodded, she made her promise not to tell anyone, or she (the hostess) might get in trouble.
Tying the butterfly around Emily's wrist, as Elizabeth looks on.

She was thrilled!!
The hostess then fastened a butterfly in Elizabeth's hair.
This photo pretty much captures Elizabeth's expression the entire day

New York: Toys, Toys, Toys!

We visited two enormous toy stores in New York City - FAO Schwarz and the Toys R Us in Times Square.  FAO Schwarz is an old favorite - Elizabeth and I have visited it three times now - and it never disappoints.  The Toys R Us in Times Square was insane - first of all, the first thing you see when you walk in the door is a two-story ferris wheel inside of the building!  There are also characters wandering the store, a life size Barbie dream house, and a huge Jurassic Park dinosaur, roaring at shoppers as they walk by.  It was definitely an interesting place to visit, but I'm not sure how anyone gets any real shopping done in there!
I love FAO Schwarz!!
The Barbie fashion show still delights them.
Watching a magic show in the middle of the store.

Emily loves this piano - for the second year in a row, she was the only one of us to "play it."
We found Indiana Jones in the Lego department.
Barbies, Barbies, Barbies!!
Toys R Us - I simply could not fit the entire Ferris Wheel in the picture, but you get the idea (taken from the second floor of the store).

Superman hangs from the ceiling...
...as does Spiderman!
