On June 17th, Connecticut began slowly easing some of its COVID-19 restrictions, including those related to youth sports. While low risk sports like baseball and softball were allowed to resume immediately, moderate risk sports (like soccer) had to go through a series of steps before full games were allowed. All clubs in Connecticut were required to follow a three phase protocol, with each phase lasting at least two weeks. While some clubs eased into things, Emily's club (based on parent and player feedback) jumped in with both feet and by phase 3, were allowed to resume full games against other clubs. Emily was thrilled to get in two games with her team over the last few weeks. Both games were played under brutally hot conditions (water breaks mandated at the 20 minute mark of each half as the temps in both were well over 90 degrees), but that didn't seem to bother her. She played the entirety of the first game (due, in large part, to her excellent physical condition) and all but a few minutes of the second game. The second game was by far her best game in a long time and we were all really pleased with her toughness, skill level and game IQ. It still remains to be seen what the fall will hold for sports, so we are enjoying watching her play every opportunity we have.
When it's 100 degrees, the turf is usually 110 or higher.
Emily defended the opposing player deep into the corner here and then did some fancy footwork that had the girl (literally) fall off the field of play (white line) while Emily was able to gain possession and clear the ball.
Lots of hard work in the gym has made her a much stronger defender and harder to turn on.
