Each year, volunteers are asked to assist with placing flags on the graves of more than 9,000 veterans at the State Veteran's Cemetery. This year, the girls' school coordinated a group of students and parents as volunteers and on Saturday morning, we arrived at the cemetery bright and early and ready to help. The girls and their friends did a wonderful job of respectfully placing flags at each grave. I worked with Emily and together, we read the names, service branch and war for each veteran. We were especially impressed with those that served in more than one war, as well as those that were the recipient of a Purple Heart. After we finished, a news crew from Fox News arrived and not only wanted some video of the kids placing flags, but also wanted to interview one of the students. The principal selected Elizabeth to represent the school. It all happened so quickly that she didn't even have time to get nervous. The clip aired on Saturday night and she really did a great job. We are so proud of her and so thankful to our veterans!

Every time we saw a marker for someone that served in Korea, we wondered if Grandpa knew him. Especially this man, who is almost exactly the same age as my dad and probably served at the same time. I have to say, I was really surprised when Elizabeth made reference to my dad being drafted for Korea during the interview.
