Hurricane Diaries: Day 5

Thursday:  After 103 hours, electricity was restored to Clover Street at 1:03 this afternoon.  When we awoke this morning, only 18% of the state and 9% of Middletown remained in the dark.  Despite the improving numbers, we were advised mid-morning that we would not have electricity until Tuesday evening, so imagine Lee's surprise when the power kicked on after lunch.  Today was supposed to be Emily's first day of school, but because so many schools in our district still do not have power, that date was pushed back to next Tuesday.  When a bus picked up some students this morning (for Catholic high school), I thought that the girls would cry.  Other than missing school, however, both of them loved being without electricity - they thought that it was such an adventure.  In fact, when I got home tonight, electricity was the furthest thing from my mind - they almost forgot to tell me that we had it back!
My Petzl running headlamp was the single item that we couldn't live without this week.  Although Lee mocked me when I bought this headlamp, he used it more than I did.  It is amazing how dark it actually is when there are no working street lights for miles!
