The Season of Our Disconnect
Today is Ash Wednesday and, inspired by Susan Maushart, we have committed as a family to disconnect our television until Easter Sunday. Maushart wrote about how she and her children turned their backs on technology for 6 months and the changes it made in their lives. We are not as brave, but we have decided to give up our television for Lent. For the next 6 1/2 weeks, we are going to unplug the television in our house - no shows, no movies. This is something that we discussed extensively with the girls and although they were intially opposed, they have come around a bit. In truth, they do not watch a lot of television during the week, so this sacrifice will likely hurt Lee and I more than it will hurt them (it certainly will when the girls are bored and begging for just one show). We hope that this time will give us the chance to catch up on our reading and to become really good at all of our board games and card games. To be honest, we don't know if we can do it - but by making our goal public, we feel that we need to live it up to our own expectations. I also have a feeling that the Easter Bunny is going to be quite good to all of us if we succeed.
