Activity

From Merriam Webster, noun:  (a) the quality or state of being active; (b) a form of organized, supervised, often extracurricular recreation.
Elizabeth has always been a high maintenance very active child, but kindergarten seems to have taken this to a whole new level.  She simply can't stand to sit around and do nothing - unless she's watching television, and as much as we would enjoy the peace and quiet, we are not about to park her in front of the television for hours on end.  So our new challenge is keeping her busy with interesting and stimulating projects.  We recently loaded up on a bunch of inexpensive craft kits and are scrambling to think of ideas (and accepting ideas as well!) for activities.  Because that's what she wants she calls her thirst for constant stimulation - "activity."  As in "are we doing an activity today?" and "what activity are we doing today?"  Below are some of our recent projects.

Lee worked on a couple of stepping stones with the girls.

This one included both "jewels" and handprints.

The beads are over Emily's head, but Elizabeth showed amazing dexterity and patience.

Elizabeth actually finished her entire bead owl and brought it to school as a present for her kindergarten teacher.

I have a good one for you- our kids LOVED it...well, sort of anyway...when they weren't running scared. So, our kids are REALLY into science and Laila recently brought home a book about volcanoes so we decided to make our own.

I have some pics I need to post but let me tell you, the "lava" spewed everywhere, much to the delight of the kids. We have the recipe if you're interested :-)

MELISSA!!!! Please, anytime. I don't have the patience that you have. Although I have to say, Elizabeth was quite good with the bead project - I only had to help a little bit. Emily, on the other hand, was a disaster....

How about buying a bag of scrap yarn, buttons, paper, those wiggily eyes, etc and giving her some glue (put food coloring in the glue so it can be a pretty color) and just let her make endless collages. She could decorate just about anything...paper, boxes, make faces, etc

have you ever made you own playdough? that is fun and then fun to play with after, and you could add extract to it to make it smell like oranges, or whatever...

how about a bucket of water and a real paintbrush, from Daddy, and let her paint outside...the driveway, the house, etc...

one more....get a bottle of tonic water, anything with bubbles that is clear, and drop raisins in it....the bubbles collect around the raisins and raise them and lower them....
