Light the Menorah

Elizabeth has been learning about Hanukkah at school and when I got home from work last Friday, she demanded to know why we didn't have a menorah in our house and why we were not celebrating Hanukkah.  She claims that her teacher - who we see at mass at our Catholic church every weekend - celebrates Hanukkah, so why don't we?  Rather than enter into a long, religious explanation that probably wouldn't make sense (to us or her), we pointed out that Miss Sarah celebrated Hanukkah and that perhaps we could light the menorah with her one night during Hanukkah.  That satisfied Elizabeth and on Sunday night, Sarah and Debby came over, menorah and candles in hand, so that we could light the menorah together.  They explained a little bit about Hanukkah and then lit the candles and sang.  The girls were impressed - and I am not only grateful that there will be some religious diversity in their lives, but also that we have friends that are willing to share their customs with us (and answer all of our ridiculous questions!).

Elizabeth just loved it!!
