The third week of July was one of the hottest on record - and Elizabeth's birthday happened to fall during that week. Early on, my friend Julie invited several kids, including Elizabeth and Emily, over for an afternoon of swimming - on Elizabeth's birthday. I wasn't sure what to do and finally told Julie that they could go, but that it was Elizabeth's birthday and did she want to deal with that? If you know Julie, you know that she went way overboard with this information and next thing you know, she's having a party for Elizabeth. I decided not to tell Elizabeth, because I thought that she would become insufferable, so it ended up being a surprise party. When I got home from work that night, Elizabeth told me that it was "the best day ever" - so thank you Julie and all of Elizabeth's friends.
She knew that there were cupcakes - she just didn't know that they were birthday cupcakes!!
There's nothing quite like opening a present that you know that your mom doesn't want you to have....hence, Julie in the background saying "I checked first!" Elizabeth was definitely nervous!
