All Saints Day

The girls have a new principal at their school this year and one of the many great ideas she has brought to the school is the celebration of All Saints Day.  She was not too keen on celebrating Halloween during the school day, but she suggested that instead, the students celebrate All Saints Day - it is, after all, a Catholic school!  The students each selected a saint and dressed up in a way that represented that saint - students in the upper grades worked on in depth projects about their selections.  Emily decided to be Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Lee and I know that she picked this particular saint so that she could bring her Bitty Baby to school, but she was adorable nonetheless.  Elizabeth chose Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a saint that she learned about while reading ahead in her religion book.  She did a google image search and in almost all of the pictures of St. Elizabeth, she was wearing a white dress and a red cloak.  She also carried a basket of bread with her, symbolism for the miracle of the roses.  Both girls looked absolutely adorable in their costumes and they had a terrific time at school that day!

Halloween

This year's trick or treating was unlike any other that we've experienced with the girls.  First of all, they were both really into the amount of candy they were getting, which is a new thing.  In prior years, all they have wanted to do is show off their costumes to a few neighbors.  This year, we went to many more houses than we ever have before; and when Emily got tired, she went home to hand out candy with Lee while Elizabeth and trekked all over the neighborhood - it was crazy!  But they had such a great time, especially going to their friends' houses and running into friends while we were out and about!
Emily just loved that fan!

Elizabeth carried her "parasol" all night!

And they're off!!

Christmas Shop

At Yankee Candle, it is Christmas all  year round and there is really no place better to get you in the Christmas spirit.  The girls were soooo excited to see Santa, even though we didn't even mention it to them (they remembered from a few years ago).  We walked through the Bavarian Village, checked out all of the miniature houses, and then waited in line to see Santa!!  It was all very exciting!!
There were Santa figures of all nationalities all over the place.

When I was a kid, we had Christmas lights just like this "bubbler" on our tree.  They were my favorite.

Yankee Candle

The girls were off from school on Election Day and I have a few vacation days remaining, so I took some time off from work and the four of us drove up to Yankee Candle's flag ship store for a day of shopping and fun (poor Lee).  I love Yankee Candle and was able to get a lot of accessories for the Thanksgiving holiday (I have tons of Christmas stuff, but seem to fall short with other holidays) - thank goodness for coupons!!!  The girls had fun shopping, believe it or not, and also made some candles while we were there, which was fun too.  We had lunch at the Chandlers, the Yankee Candle restaurant, and then visited the candle history museum before leaving.  It was a great way to spend the day.
Inspecting the map, deciding where to go first.

The girls had a great time at Wax Works - we could have stayed there all day!

Pirates!!

Last Sunday, we went to see How I Became A Pirate, the first show of the season for the Hartford Children's Theatre.  It was a short show and we had excellent seats and the girls really enjoyed it.  They are already badgering me about going to another play.

Rock the Vote

Voting is such an important part of being an American and I think that it is so important, regardless of your political affiliation. So this year, we took the girls to the polls with us when we voted.  Because it was a presidential election year, they also voted in school - in the US Senate race and the presidential race.  Lee and I did not discuss our political views with them prior to their voting because we were so interested in who they would vote for and why.  I'm so glad that we didn't because it is clear from the conversations that we've had since then that our views would have influenced their votes.

Elizabeth voted for Barack Obama for president - "because I think he's a good father."  She voted for Linda McMahon (R) in the senate race - "because she doesn't have pimples and because she's a girl."  Not sure why she thinks that Chris Murphy (D) has pimples, but she must have noticed something in the thousands of commercials we've seen over the last few weeks.

Emily voted for Barack Obama for president - "because he's our president."  She also voted for Linda McMahon in the senate race - "because Chris Murphy tells lies and Linda McMahon doesn't."  I'm telling you, the McMahon commercials made a big impact on the girls.

I remember walking to the polls and going into the voting booth with my parents (probably my mom) as a child and since I've turned 18, I've only missed voting in one election (the primary in August of this year, because I was so disgusted with the state of national politics and because by the time our primary was held, the nominations were clear).  My senior year of high school, I remember being heart broken that I was not old enough to vote in the presidential election; I voted by absentee ballot in every election while I was away at college.  As conservatives, Lee and I are tiny red dots in a sea of Connecticut blue.  But it was important for us to vote on the national issues, as well as the local issues of bond funding for projects.  It was also important, for me, that the girls see us vote.  My plan is that we will always take them with us to vote and that when they are older, they will remember how important it is to vote!
I took Emily into the voting booth with me and read each line of the ballot to her.  When I was done, she carried my ballot over to the counting machine.

Lyman Orchards

On the last Saturday in October, we got a call from some old friends, letting us know that they were heading to nearby Lyman Orchards and asking if we were interested in joining them.  We met up with them over the summer and our kids really hit it off, so while Lee was clearing the yard, the girls and I met up with them.  We had a really great time - wagon rides, pony rides and the corn maze, all such fun!!!  The day was beautiful, the foliage was gorgeous, and it was just a fun time for everyone.
Posing with the horses after our wagon ride.
Much to my surprise, both girls wanted to go on pony rides.

Look at those grins!!
